Philadelphia Eagles History

In 1933, NFL's Frankford YellowJackets saw its dawn in Philadelphia, which was bought by Bert Bell and Lud Wray for $2500. Even they christened the squad as Eagles in respect of the emblem of the New Deal's National Recovery Act. Subsequently this new alliance faced struggle, losses and defeat in its first decade. On 22nd October 1939, Eagles participated in the first broadcasted professional football game but were knocked down by the Brooklyn Dodgers by 23-14. Slowly and steadily in the mid-40's, Eagles demonstrated the signs of improvement. Instructor Greasy Neale took the club to the summit by supervising them. As a result Eagles consecutively brought home Eastern Division crowns and two playoffs title. From 1947 to 1949, Steve Van Buren, Pete Pihos and Bosh Pritchard united and with an overwhelming defense took Philadelphia into the NFL championship. There they conquered two esteem NFL titles in a row in 1948 and 1949 respectively. The Eagles conquered their third NFL crown in 1960 against Green Bay Packers at Franklin Field with 17-13. Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin who was also playing his final season became the league's Most Valuable Player after passing 2500 yards. Brocklin's preferred receivers Tommy McDonald and Pete Retzlaff also helped Philadelphia to win the title after 11 years. Van Brocklin publicly announced his withdrawal at the end of the season. Now came the era of 60's in which Brocklin was replaced by quarterback Sonny Jurgensen who also proved to be a very resourceful sportsperson. In his very first season he made a league-record by throwing 3723 yards. Despite of employing six different coaches from 1962-1977, Philadelphia Eagles could not bring home the victory. In 1971, Eagles left for Franklin Field as their new home. The time of 70s to mid-80 was again the era of achievements and losses. In 1973, the Eagles enjoyed an exciting offensive season under coach Mike McCormick's guidance and rookie quarterback Roman Gabriel. Dick Vermeil became the coach of the year since he steered the Eagles to four successive playoff appearances. In 1981, the Eagles faced the setback of losing the Super Bowl to Oakland Raiders by 27-10. Randall Cunnigham was a skilled passer and also came out as one of the superb running quarterbacks in NFL history. He was also the Eagles top rusher each year from 1987 to 1990. In the year 1997, RB Ricky Watters rushed for 1000-yards and became the first Eagle to top in three successive campaigns. The Eagles laid down a team record and sent league high 10 players to the Pro Bowl in 2002 during the 31st and final football season held at Veteran Stadium.
