Buffalo Bills History
No team in league history has suffered through as much heartbreak as the Buffalo Bills. Featuring some of the finest teams to ever play in the National Football League, the Bills are still waiting for the day they are named Super Bowl champions.
Buffalo, New York was awarded the seventh American Football League franchise in 1959, and owner Ralph Wilson quickly began to build the team’s foundation. In front of 15,229 ticket-holders at War Memorial Stadium, the Bills would lose their home opener 27-21 to Denver. However, early success was all the team experienced, winning two AFL championships in its first six years of existence. As quick as success arrived it can also depart, as Buffalo would wait another twenty five years before playing for another title. In the franchise’s first ever Super Bowl appearance, Buffalo lost 20-19 to the New York Giants in what’s often considered the best Super Bowl of all-time. With the Giants up a single point in the closing seconds, Buffalo kicker Scott Norwood had a 47-yard field goal attempt sail wide right, sealing the victory for New York. Some fans believe the franchise has yet to recover from such a devastating defeat, as the Bills would be the first team to ever play in four consecutive Super Bowls, yet losing all four games. Can a franchise bounce back from such an excruciating period of tough losses? True Buffalo fans still believe that the team will at some point capture that elusive Super Bowl title.
It’s no secret the Bills have had great players; they’ve been to several Super Bowls and won plenty of division titles. The question remains, which is the best? Cases can be made for running back O.J. Simpson, running back Thurman Thomas, and wide receiver James Lofton, but the best is arguably quarterback Jim Kelly. Known for his ability to master Buffalo’s high-octane offense, Kelly led the Bills to a record four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. With playmakers such as Thomas and Andre Reed around him, Kelly destructed opposing defenses on a weekly basis. He played eleven seasons for the Bills and led them to eight playoff berths. A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Kelly was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2002, taking his place among the league’s best. He may not have been the most talented player to wear a Bills uniform, but Jim Kelly’s ability to make the franchise and those around him better was irreplaceable.
The Bills moved into their current home, Ralph Wilson Stadium, in 1973 after playing thirteen seasons at War Memorial Stadium. Rich Stadium, named after Rich Foods, was the original title of the stadium but it was later re-named to Ralph Wilson in 1998 after the Bills owner. Considered a fan-friendly stadium, Ralph Wilson has great sight lines, expansive space for tailgating, and even individual cup holders for each seat. Seating 75,339 ticket-holders, opposing teams have struggled to win on the Bills home turf because of amazing crowds and troublesome weather conditions. With renovations throughout the years it has remained a unique stadium and one of the more popular venues in the National Football League.
